The Scoop on Date Labeling

You will see many versions of date labeling on foods at the grocery store. The labels vary by the kind of food and are used at the discretion of the manufacturer. Note: there is a legal requirement for infant formula and some baby foods.

Sell By

Tells the store how long to display the product for sale. You should buy the product before the date expires.

Use By

The last date recommended for the use of the product while at peak quality. The date has been determined by the manufacturer of the product.

Best If Used By

A "Best if Used By (or Before)" date is recommended for best flavor or quality. It is not a purchase or safety date.

Expires On
Do not use after

Legally required for infant formula and some baby foods. Items should be discarded if the date is passed.

Pack Date

Date the item was packed.

Code Date

"Closed or coded dates" are packing numbers for use by the manufacturer.
